Keep Going

When you want to live life out of the ordinary, you have to step into uncertainty. Letting go like that is really scary. But it is necessary. In order to make something great, there will be parts of the process where it is not so great. But this is a necessary component in order for it to all come together. It requires trust. It requires failure. Through the good and the bad, you just have to keep going.

One of the ways I am reminded of this lesson is while making pots. When it comes to my art (and my life), I have large notions, visions, and ideas of what I want to create. And lately, slowly, but surely, I am beginning to see it all come together. But it has and continues to require a lot of risk and a lot of bumps along the way. Despite that, I am beginning to see the ideas I have written out and created in my head manifest in my art and in my life.

Pottery is a process, just like life. Each stage reminds you of the ways you must surrender control. Part of life and the art making process is learning how to evolve as things unfold. To make something great, you must take risks. There will be times when you are not sure if it is going to work out. But stay with it. You owe it to the piece, and to yourself, to work through the process. Don’t give up.

Let go of other people’s thoughts and listen to your gut. The process isn’t pretty. But it is transformational. If you fail, you fail. And you carry those lessons with you through the next day. It all comes together in the end.

  • Step out of knowing.
  • Embrace the uncertainty.
  • Let your intuition guide you.
  • Keep going.
