Step Back, Move Forward

Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward.

Society constantly tells us to strive for “more”. To do more, to be more, to make more. It is easy to get stuck in the mindset of “more” without knowing the intention behind it or what “more” would mean. It might seem contradictory, but sometimes you have to take a step back before you can take that leap.

It is easy to get caught up in the middle of things. But by taking a step back, you stop letting situations define you, you allow yourself to see the bigger picture, you create space to ground yourself, and you learn to let go.

So, take a moment to step back. Stop holding on so tightly to the world around you. Pause and look at the situation from a new perspective. And then let go and leap into the unknown. There is no way of knowing how your life will go, trust in yourself and see how it unfolds.

Getting caught up in the middle of things? Approach the situation a different way:

  1. Take a step back
    • Breathe, laugh, and relax. Try stepping away from the situation for a day and try something new. Take your mind off it and embrace something else for a moment. Get outside, spend time with friends, and enjoy life’s little moments.
  2. Feel your feet
    • This term is often used as an expression to remind people to ground themselves. By feeling our feet, we tune into the part of the body and our connection to the earth. Take a moment to be still and ground yourself. You can try meditation, gardening, yoga, coloring, or anything you need to make yourself feel grounded and at ease.
  3. Set your intention
    • Spend time with yourself. Think about what it is you really want. Not what you should want, not what you think you deserve, but what you truly want. Pick an intention (not a goal) and carry that with you through all things. An intention is not a final destination, but rather a way of being as you work towards any direction. Focus on how you want to be as you move through life. Don’t cling onto it too tightly, but hold that in your heart.
  4. Take a leap
    • There is no way of knowing. You will mess up and make mistakes. But it will all be okay. At some point, you just have to let go and jump and trust that it will all work out. Breathe deep and take a leap.
